Many adults first heard negative talk about and experienced shame associated with our bodies’ in childhood. Some of us were told we were “getting fat”, or “had gained weight” by caregivers or family members. Others were bullied for being larger bodied by our classmates.
Body shaming led to dieting and food restriction – remember the diet “shakes”, the cabbage soup diet and your very first no carbohydrate diet (ah! the eggs, cheese, bacon and pork rinds).
I want to help you break free of the weight loss and weight gain cycle that has held your brain, body and spirit hostage.
Maybe, along with dieting, you started to focus on exercise to lose weight too (the workout videos, tread mill, aerobics classes, boot camps). Perhaps, at some point you started having trouble maintaining your diet and exercise “routine”, and you took diet pills, laxatives, stimulants or used alcohol, cocaine or other drugs to “help keep your weight down.” Little did you know that you were stuck in a cycle of weight loss and weight gain.
When you were restricting food and compulsively exercising you would reach your “lowest weight ever.” When the low calorie diet and grueling exercise stopped there would be episodes of binge eating. Ultimately, you would gain the weight back (and sometimes more). Now here you are, after what feels like a lifetime of trying to control your weight, you are battling with obsessive thinking about your body, food and exercise.
You have a sense that the old vicious cycle isn’t working. The world around you is screaming at you to try the next fad diet: “cut out sugar completely”, “buy that new piece of exercise equipment” and then, THIS time, you will finally have the body of your dreams which, of course, will ultimately lead to the partner of your dreams, the job of your dreams, the house of your dreams, the friends of your dreams!!!
You have heard this voice long enough to know that it is not speaking the truth.
Your intuition tells you that these thoughts are lies that will keep you trapped. Trust your intuition! I want you to experience mental, physical and spiritual health and freedom in your relationships with your body, food and exercise.
